Madrid Day2

After a much needed rest day 2 began with a crying baby, screaming mother and barking dogs. It was like a free alarm clock! A lot had to be done today…Mike and I grabbed a cafe con leche from the restaurant next door and headed out to Fuencarall, the popular shopping street that connects to Gran Via, arguably the Mill Avenue of Madrid (if Mill was less douchey). After a bit of shopping and walking it was time to start band practice. My first full day in the city and we were getting right down to business. I think one of the hardest parts of this move was feeling like I should be on vacation because I am in Europe, but in reality I have to bust my ass and get to work. I meet my bandmate Julian for the first time and begin familiarizing myself with the songs. Fortunately everyone is already comfortable playing the tracks with each other. I am bringing an entirely new element to the band and finding my place is going to be a challenge. This will be my first experience back with a band since highschool! Needless to say it felt great to pick up the guitar and feel it in my hands again. It had been over a year since I played and I could feel the sensation again coming back into my fingertips..or maybe it was the burning pain of not having calices anymore, but regardless it felt good. We needed some work, but even after the first practice I really felt like we had something cool going on.

So after we ended practice around 10 at night it was time to go out for my first night on the town. We headed out and arrived to the bar around midnight. Mike introduced to a group of people…all of which primarily spoke spanish so I cordially said hola! but was immediately pointed out as the new American guy who didn’t speak spanish. After the jokes were thrown I made my way to the bar where we got a Caña which is a very small beer that comes with food. It is quite simply the most amazing thing ever! Tapas! Why every bar in America does not have this perplexes me but it truly is wonderful ordering a beer and receiving free food. This would be my diet for the next two weeks while the apartment continued to bring problem after problem….more on that later. At two we left the bar…not to go home mind you, but to move to the clubs that serve drinks till 6 in the morning! Thats right 6am..take that America and your damn 2 o clock drinking laws! Basically Madrid serves drinks beyond your ability to stay awake and even then when you are stumbling home drunk you can just buy a cerveza on the street for one euro and walk home looking like a crazy person. After a few different clubs, some of which played nothing but 90’s alternative rock, we headed to Nasti; a club on our apartment street. The line was huge people were everywhere and it was 4 in the morning. The sight was hilarious and a lot to take in. I just couldn’t believe that I was still awake having only landed the day before. Once inside we got a few drinks and all of a sudden a huge scuffle breaks out and our friend Ivan (who’s birthday we were celebrating) was knocked in the face. Bleeding from a large gash above his eye Ivan smiled at me and said I promise this doesn’t usually happen. The funny thing was, my first night going out with people who I just met, who have never even been in a fight before, ended up getting in a fight. Luckily no one was seriously hurt, but Ivan needed some stitches. After waiting for the ambulance for an hour we finally started to venture back to our friends house around 7 in the morning. “jesus Christ! What I night!” I felt like I got initiated or something, the funny thing was it was only Thursday…I couldn’t even think about the weekend at this point…

My Life In Madrid So Far....Day 1

I thought it might be a good idea to start a little journal of sorts on what’s been happening in Espana, more for myself to look back on but to share as well with anyone who was interested. My arrival to Spain happened on September 7th at about 7 in the morning. I got through customs without so much as a blink. Meeting my friend in the terminal we ventured out, riddled with luggage, to my first steps in a new country. At the time our apartment wasn’t finished so we were staying at a friends place. Vitaly was kind enough to let us crash on the couch and use his living room as storage. After eating at a cafe Mike. Showed me around the city a bit and took me to were our place was going to be. You always know your in for a treat when the first thing someone says about the place your going to be living in is “lower your expectations…like really low…” I knew I wasn’t going to be living luxuriously but I was a little nervous to see what he meant. Upon entering the apartment it was full of workers removing and tearing down furniture. The place was a disaster! The walls looked charred and the paint was peeling. The bedroom had a massive green colored stain on the wall where the mattress had been, which only bewildered me more as I thought about how someone could live in these conditions. After moment Mike looked at me laughed and said “well…what do you think?” I’m not sure what I thought to be honest. At this point after the plane flight, the walking and now the extreme home makeover taking place I just shut off and nodded my head. I was far too jet lagged to come up with any kind of explanation as to why this may or may not be a good idea. The location was amazing! Looking out from our apartment door you could feel the energy that existed in the area. Bars, clubs, restaurants, markets all within a stones throw. This stretched on street after street. I had never been in this kind of situation living where everyone wants to come spend their evenings and go out. This made me feel much better about the apartment, but there was an overwhelmingly large amount of work that had to be done in order to get our place livable. The short list went like this: Paint the entire Piso (apartment) Visit ikea for furniture because the place is completely empty Get Internet Buy a fridge Turn the gas on so we can have warm showers. Each of these seem like relatively simple tasks but when you are performing these tasks in a place where you can’t understand anyone and everyone procrastinates worse then your senior year in high school, things get tricky.
